Impact force calculation and more

Impact force calculation and more

Impact force calculation and more

(OP)
I'm designing in house shear press for plastic part. For the sake of simplicity lets assume that the hole geometry t(thickness), w(width), and h (height) is .062". the punch and die are made out of M6 tool steel and assume that I have optimum clearance. I can calculate the punch force by knowing the ultimate strength of the material. How do I size the air cylinder accordingly, knowing the punch force needed. Does the speed matter? speed determines the kinetic energy and kinetic enery does the work during punching process. The air cylinder travels 2 inch to complete the punching process and its got 300 lbf (based on 2.5" bore @ 60 psi).I feel that this is overkill. All of these sit on a linear guide, so I need to size the linear guide properly so that the ball doesn't brinell due to impact force.

Thanks

RE: Impact force calculation and more

Use machine ways (gibs) instead and it will potentially be the strongest part of the system.

For the shearing, some systems rely on pressure rather than speed for shearing.  But higher speeds can give a cleaner cut.

M2 is easier to source and probably cheaper than M6, just a thought.
