(OP)
I need to have some 15kV cable used to externally excite a generator tested before use. DC Hipot testing has been suggested, but I don't think it will be of much use in detecting defects in an AC application.  Can someone point me to an IEEE standard that would govern the testing of such cable?  I am considering purchasing IEEE 400-2001, but it specifies shielded cable, and I don't believe the cable in this application is shielded.

IEEE 400

If it's new cable it's almost certainly shielded, unless part of a equipment assembly.
