NX5 - Add View

NX5 - Add View

NX5 - Add View

(OP)
I have a certified M90 Notebook, Dual Core 2.33GHz, with 2GB (soon to be 4GB) of RAM.

The machine runs fine, except when adding views to drawings. It just seems to take forever, and I can't figure out what could be the cause.
Just adding a view of a simple Block takes 7-8 seconds.

Could it be my graphics card, or a setting within NX ? Anyone have any suggestions for me ?

RE: NX5 - Add View

What graphics card is it? We have had little luck with laptops using ATI graphics cards, but certified Dell stuff usually uses better Nvidia models. The problem we had with the wrong cards is that it would wait for a prolonged period while processing the graphics and then display it all at once. Whereas cards that perform better progressively re-paint the display. Now that was in modeling and drafting tends of itself to do the former behavior anyway so don't be too alarmed, you may just have a larger drawing that you machine capable of working quickly with. If you like there are ways to lighten the load we could describe, but get your hardware sorted first.

Check with your notebook manufacturer before upgrading RAM as some tend to "Bubble" when you max out the memory meaning that although there is more it runs at least as slowly because the mother board isn't really set up to manage that amount. Someone might correct that layman's description of the term, but knowing the term itself may be enough to be able to put the question to a technical person before you go down that route.

Best Regards

Hudson

Go to customer defaults and under Drafting -> View -> Threads, make sure that the 'True Hidden Line' option is toggled OFF.

John, Hudson, thanks for the suggestions.

Believe it, or not, the poor response is because I was connected to my office license server via VPN.

If I use the license server on my Notebook, then the response time for adding a view is excellent.

RE: NX5 - Add View

That shouldn't be the case the license server setup that I have used in the past usually takes up very little time just long enough to tag a packet back and forth so the the license is confirmed. Do you know why you think it is happening, or do you have any trouble with modeling?

Please by all means lets know if you find out more.

Cheers

Hudson,

Changing modules is fine. It's just adding the view where there is an extremely noticeable delay.

RE: NX5 - Add View

I just checked license server activity using a 'tail' file and there is absolutely NO license activity while adding views to a drawing.  The only activity is when you change the module to Drafting since the software checks OUT a Drafting license and checks IN the Solid Modeling license, but once the Drafting license is checked-out, there is no further activity.

RE: NX5 - Add View

I can see that with two machines and a firewall log that there's nothing much going on. I couldn't duplicate the problem so it gets hard to pin down anything more than just the data packets flying back and forth without any other great amount of activity happening. I opened drafting then waited about a minute added some views, waited another minute and then went back to modeling and there's about a three minute gap between the packets that distinguish themselves by source and port to be the license activity.

I wonder what is happening and why? Phil if this makes sense you could always try and see if it chases out anything that we can hang an explanation around for you, but it sounds like a job for the Pros at GTAC to me.

Best of Luck

RE: NX5 - Add View

Are you working on a local file or are you accessing your company's network through the VPN?

RE: NX5 - Add View

(OP)
Cowski,

The file is on my hard drive.

Running NX5 out-of-the-box using a local license, geometry is simply a 100x100x100 Block, adding the base views and projected views is pretty much instant.

Accessing the license through VPN, and you're looking at several seconds to place the base view and subsequently display the projected views.

I have to agree with John though, there shouldn't be any licensing activity.
