where all can user set his preferences in NX4

where all can user set his preferences in NX4

where all can user set his preferences in NX4

(OP)
Hi All,

Iam curious to know , where all places can user change the preferences and what extension files get generated.. Iam referring to NX4 on windows machine.. I know that user can set his setting in
1)utilities->customer defaults. file generated is with extension .dpv

2) roles... the file generated is with .mtx

3) color definition file ..file generated with .cdf

4) for plotting width definition file ... file extension is .wdf

etc..

Iam making a document ,which will help me to tell the user where all he can change and what files gets created and where he can store them ...

Any help will be appreciated..

Most of the stuff that does not end up in any of those files, tends to end up in the Windows registry.

Hi John,
Thanks for that information.. but actually Iam in need of a summary of all the files and their extensions where all an user can make changes and store on his machine which will be specific for his login...

Regards,

RE: where all can user set his preferences in NX4

The reason that this summary has never been produced is probably because there are quite a few settings that exist in more than one place, and depending on how your system is set up on will take precedence over another from either a permanent or a session based standpoint. You may have already noticed that you change some things and they stay that way, sometimes forever, other times for the duration of the session, and occasionally the very next time they're set back to the original state.

One of the things that also comes into play are the customer defaults, capable of being set up for user, group or site level access using three .DPV files whose paths are set using environmental variables in a file called ugii_env.dat that lives in the installation directories. Usually in company sites the administrator will set all this up and restrict access to some of the files so that the site standards are enforced while users have personal preference over their interfaces etc... Anyway a lot of the site standards for drafting fonts etc are mainly contained in customer defaults.

Is that what you needed to know?

Best of Luck

Hi Hudson,

Thanks so much for that information.. Actually Iam doing this for the reason that when user has to move from NX4 to NX5 I can look at one place for all the user settings that perticular user has done for his day to day activities.. Like for example the .sbf file actually resides in the UGII directory .. but when I uninstall NX4, if suppose i delete the UGII directory also, then the user setting is lost.. So I need information on the file extensions and what that file is for ,so that I can capture these files and then uninstall the existing version and install the ugraded version..

Hope Iam clear on why iam looking for this kind of information ...

Thanks

RE: where all can user set his preferences in NX4

You ought to be able to directly substitute the .mtx files for a start. However a few icons and/or new functions have been introduced so you'll want to muck about with the settings a bit then re-save some new roles. It does however save a fair bit of time to begin with.

You could try the same for the other files, as I'm 99% sure the cdf will be fine. For the .wdf it can't hurt to try.

For all your other customer defaults they usually have to be redefined from one version to the next. It's a bit painful but shouldn't take all that long to go through and bring it back to what you require.

As with all things you can always backup a copy of the files containing your settings and then try and substitute another copy that you have edited of got from elsewhere. If it doesn't work you have only to restore the original and try again. Of course you have to be quite careful, but this is how most of us figure out how to do the administration tasks.

Best regards

Hudson
