Alkali resistant paint for process tank

Alkali resistant paint for process tank

Alkali resistant paint for process tank

(OP)
    Hello;
        Does anyone know of an epoxy or compound of paint
which I can coat the inside of some new process water tanks
we are building. The water will be as high as 180 degrees F. and will have an alkali chemical mixture of about 13 OZ/GAL.  This will be a 6 stage degrease operation with
each tank propeller agitated and about 1200 gallons each.
  Sorry, the tanks are just low carbon steel--- stainless
was just too expensive.

                       Thanks;
                             Mike

RE: Alkali resistant paint for process tank

None of the coatings for your application will not be cheap.
SS might have been cheaper.

I would get in touch with your cleaner supplier and ask for his recommendations. If not forthcoming get another supplier. Check with your supplier and see if you can get by with CS in the cleaning station vat.

Normally tank coatings and linings are made for closed systems and most will not take much physical abuse. Make sure you describe your application fully when requesting information no matter the supplier.
There are many pitfalls in what you are attempting, so do your homework.

If your vats are small enough and there is a Powder Coating Co around there are a few coatings, especially from Dupont that might work.

You can checkout Carboline products if no information is given. It will probably be a Plasite Product.

Ensure that, whatever your coating selection, it is backed up by available results from a thorough qualification test programme and think about having the coating supplier around to supervise its application.

oldpilot....

As stated above, sometimes SS tanks are the best choice... and can be cheaper than a coated carbon steel tank

Again, find out from your chemical supplier what kind of tanks he uses....informally contact some of his other clients and ask them what they are using.

Another option might be to use plastic tanks. They are cheap, and having long experience with plastics in the plating industry, and I can say that polypropylene will certainly tolerate your temperatures of 180F. The tricky part is to support the tank so it will not sag/buckle.  Even a 100 gallon tank with 1/2" thick walls will benefit from some girthing at this temperature.
