Broken external references

Broken external references

(OP)
I have some external references to a top level assembly, and I want to move them to a lower level assembly.

1 - I tried breaking the references in the hope that the dimensions would dangle, and I could reattach them to the correct level.  This didn't work.  Is there a way to get rid of the references after I broke them, or are they there forever?

2 - What is the better way to do this from scratch?

Thanks

RE: Broken external references

Go to the part that contains the external references. Click on Display/Delete dimensions. Delete the external references.

As for your second question, I avoid external references at all costs.
