What is the minimum test load to be used with Vickers tester to determine the hardness of Al alloys.

RE: Minimum Test load for Al alloys

ASTM E 384 Standard Test Method for Microindentation Hardness of Materials allows a force as small as 1 gf (9.8 mN).

but i am a bit worried about the effect of the test load to the hardness of the material. since the hardenss normally decreases with an increase in a test load. according to Dieter the minimum test load is 300gf and above this the hardness of the material should remain constant.

RE: Minimum Test load for Al alloys

A Brinell hardness test would be more effective for bulk hardness, unless you have a specific reason to use Vickers.
