will an induction motor run on pulsed DC

Hi all,

I have been doing a lot of reading about how motors work and I am particularly interested in 3phase induction motors but I cant find the specific answers. I have 2 questions:

1: Can you run a delta wired 3phase  AC induction motor on pulsed DC, using an electronic pulsing drive (essentially a DC VFD or something similar to what RC modelers use on their brushless DC motors) and using the appropriate voltage?

2:Is this a silly question?

Regards,

Neil.

RE: will an induction motor run on pulsed DC

Yes a bit of a silly question because a VFD puts out pulsing DC to do what they do.

Thanks Keith,

Thats kind of the idea i had.
i just had to ask it to be clear. smile

RE: will an induction motor run on pulsed DC

Induction motors can be driven with what's known as a "Six Step" drive.  The voltage at a motor lead is DC+, open circuit, DC-.  This makes a really crude approximation of a sine wave.  There is additional motor heating due to the harmonics.
