Do I need fireproofing
Do I need fireproofing
(OP)
Working in an existing sour gas plant (40 yrs old) with some degree (about 75%) of structural fireproofing - looks like wire mesh with some kind of cement fireproof mixture applied. Not all the beams have it and it appears that newer additions do not have it. The recent Hazop has identified the potential need for fireproofing on our new structural columns and beams. Can anyone refer me to a code or document outlining the need for structural fireproofing? Our facility is located in western canada. Is this a UL requirement? API? Who decides?

The Owner, in compliance with the requirements of his underwriter, should decide on the extent of fireproofing in the plant. Fireproofing is usually required on load bearing structures and supports that are near the vicinity of fire potential equipment.

I'm not sure the IBC applies to piperack structural steel suppports. It's starting to look like the client's underwriters will have to be the decider. Maybe it's more of an insurance issue.....
