A few ASME IX questions

A few ASME IX questions

A few ASME IX questions

(OP)
Greetings all,
I have a few ASME IX questions.  We are only using section IX as guide for our welding program.
1.) Is this the correct flow for section IX certification?
>Develop WPS
>Weld coupons per WPS
>Record actual data used during welding on PQR
>Submit coupons to lab for testing
>If coupons pass, data recorded on the PQR qualify the WPS
>Issue WPS to welders
>Can several welders use this particular WPS to attain a valid PQR
>I am trying to make a flow chart for my boss explaining the certification process.
2.) In what section of ASME IX does it state the ranges for thickness and positions covered from welding a coupon of a particular diameter and wall thickness, filler metal and no filler metal?
3.) I have been reading section IX  but can not find clear answers to the above questions.

Thank you,
Dave

RE: A few ASME IX questions

Histogram;
In general, the process steps mentioned above are correct. The welder certification is done in parallel with the procedure qualification. So, as the procedure is qualified, the welder is certified to the process used and weld deposit thickness.

Article IV, QW-451 and 452. Regarding filler metal or no filler metal, you need to look at welding process for qualification. For example, the gas tungsten arc welding process can be used/qualified with or without filler metal.

RE: A few ASME IX questions

Metengr has provided you with a good answer, but, when you ask 'Can several welders use this particular WPS to atain a valid PQR?, are you asking about using more than one welder to complete the welding of the procedure test coupon?
If so, that's ok, but, you'll need to verify the actual deposit thickness for each welder, to determine the qualified thickness range for each welder.

I apologize for my lack of clarity.  My intention was to ask if I have WPS #1  for P8, ¾" dia. tube, butt joint with 1/16" wall welded 2G and qualified with a PQR from welder #1 can welder #2 or #20 use the WPS #1 to get their PQRs?  Of course if no essential variables change.
PS
I am a Quality Engineer, with a welding back ground, in my fourth week of employment trying to find the simplest way to manage our welding documentation and make sure my welding document system works with ISO 9001-2000.  All we do is stainless steel for pressure sensors that we make in-house.  Welding is manual and with a welding lathe and maybe 10 welders.

Thank you all very much,
Dave

RE: A few ASME IX questions

yes.

RE: A few ASME IX questions

Any welder employed by the manufacturer can weld to an ASME IX qualified Welding Procedure Specificatiion (qualified by same manufacturer) provided the welder is qualified and certified per ASME IX, Article III by aforesaid manufacturer.
