Weld Stress Criteria

Weld Stress Criteria

Weld Stress Criteria

(OP)
I wonder if someone could help,

I am modelling a welded ring in Ansys and am looking to identify the failure criteria against which to judge the stress in the weld.

The weld in question is subject to both direct thrust and bending loads.

My inital thinking would be to use a theory such as the Maximum Shear Stress criteria against the material shear, but am not 100% sure. Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Stuart

RE: Weld Stress Criteria

Refer to design standards for structures. A weld shouldn't be subject to bending anyway but only direct loads. Generally the stress in the weld is limited to half the yield stress of the parent metal, unless it's a full penetration weld.

Hi STH2561971

Have a look at this site it gives calculations for various welds.

RE: Weld Stress Criteria

If this weld is subject to cyclic loading from the effects of bending, shear or tension, fatigue stress range can govern.
