Steel designations A36 and SA36 are these specs interchangeable

Steel designations A36 and SA36 are these specs interchangeable

(OP)
Steel specifications: Gr.44W, A36, SA36 Question are these specs equal or is one specification superior.

RE: Steel designations A36 and SA36 are these specs interchangeable

Iterchangable?
as in using for pressure containing component on a ASME code stamped vessel?

NO

(unless the material is double or triple certified)

RE: Steel designations A36 and SA36 are these specs interchangeable

CSA G40.21 Grade 44W has a minimum yield of 44000 PSI  wereas A/SA 36 has a min. yield of 36000.  Don't quote me on these as they may change depending on the thickness.  You would need to look at the respective standards for that.  If you are looking at use in pressure vessel construction then 44W is not an acceptable grade of G40.21.  You would have to call for CSA G40.21 Grade 38W and use those allowable stresses.

As these are general structural grades they are not always the best choice for pressure vessels.

A 36 applies to carbon steel structual shapes.  No grades apply to A 36.

RE: Steel designations A36 and SA36 are these specs interchangeable

A36 is not limited to just structural shapes.  Plates are included too.

RE: Steel designations A36 and SA36 are these specs interchangeable

if A-36 plates are processed by "coiling" and then "decoiling" by a place processor, then this A-36 plate is not identical to A-36 and can not be used on a ASME code pressure vessel until the plate is recertified to SA-36.  In short....de-coiled a-36 may give you a A-36 MTR but it will not be marked or certified to SA-36.

RE: Steel designations A36 and SA36 are these specs interchangeable

Be careful though of the year of the specification.

What I mean is that ASME SA-36 specification of say, year 2007 is considered identical to ASTM A-36 specification of a particular year only.
