718 ingot conversion

718 ingot conversion

(OP)
Dear all,

Regarding the forging conversion of 718 ingot material.

I've been experiencing some problems with product that has been converted from ingot on an open dia press to 185mm dia and GFM to size ranging from 100-60mm dia of 718.

A drop temperature is used around 1910F (1043C) for the final 50% reduction. At least 20% final reduction is carried out on the GFM. Initial forging is done at about 2050F (1121C).

I've been regularly experiencing undesirable microstructures.
I'm looking for a fairly uniform ASTM 4 or finer.
From OD to 5mm depth the microstructure is a fairly uniform 4 (sometimes 3).
Further towards the centre the grain size changes to about 20% ASTM 1 to 0 and the remaining 80% ASTM 6-8. The larger grains do have some directionality.
A post forging solution treatment does not always recovery the material.
It would be desirable to achieve the ASTM 4 or finer direct from open die pres forged and GFM product.

Any ideas?

Thanks
