Piping Material for Sea water cooling Loop

Piping Material for Sea water cooling Loop

(OP)
Guys,

Please can you advise on the most suitable material(economical as well) for a cooling water system using sea water for the following system components?

Pipes ?

Valves ?

Pumps ?

Heat exchanger ?

Do I need to allow for any special filtraton systems?

RE: Piping Material for Sea water cooling Loop

What temperature range and flow rate do you have?

(OP)
The temperature range will be in the 30~40 C range and flow rate of around 5000 m3/hr

You may want to look ar GRE pipes and fittings,  CuNi xalves (or elastomer lined butterfly valves with CuNi discs.  Titanium or hastelloy ? plate exchangers.  Don't consider 316 at these temperatures

Thanks Bill for your helpful response. Here is a star for you!

Check valves could be in super duplex. Noreva are supplying to desalination plants in Australia in this material.

With elastomer lined butterfly valves make sure the shaft is in super duplex. Also that there are seals to prevent the fluid getting behind the elastomer lining. The lining shouldbe bonded to the body. Loose fitting linings will allow the water to get behind the seal and corrode the body. The body will expand and jam the valve.

You may want to look at polymer encapsulated discs in butterfly valves.

You could also look at a PE lined steel pipe.

Growth could also be a problem and you may need to consider chlorination on the seawater intake line.

Alfa Laval & Sondex make plate heat exchangers with titanium plates.

Sulzer, KSB and Goulds offer pumps in super duplex.

If using GRP for aboveground pipes make sure it is painted to prevent biological growth.

Consider using FRP for your piping.  It should hold up against corrosion.

composite valves would be a "best" choice for this.
