I am trying to design a low current electromagnet that can pick up small metal objects (about 50 grams).

First off I want to make sure I am using the correct formulas.
I saw this one in another thread:
F = 0.577 X B^2 * A

Can I set that force equal to that of the metal objects F = ma where a = 9.8m/s?

For the magnetic field, should I use the formula
(1) B = (u*N*I)/(L)
or
(2) B = (Km*Uo*I*a^2*N) / [2(x^2+a^2)^(2/3)]
and what is the difference between the two formulas?

How does the length of the metal inside the electromagnet affect the magnets strength? Or does it?

Also in the magnetic force equation, where is that force measured at?  Is it at the very surface?

I know this is a pretty loaded thread, any help is greatly appreciated!
