Dowel Pins

Dowel Pins

Dowel Pins

(OP)
I am working on a new pressure vessel design for my company and I wanted to analyze the use of dowel pins in single shear to support a load.  I could find areas of the code that address flanges where the bolts are in tension but nothing about dowel pins in shear.  The design I am working on is fairly non-standard but I would have thought this issue would be addressed.

I imagine that I would have to show that both the dowel pin and supporting materials can resist the loads.  Any help/pointers or general suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks!

RE: Dowel Pins

This is something that is probably best covered by U-2(g).

RE: Dowel Pins

As mentioned above, U-2(g) will provide you with lots of latitude to figure it out using your own method. Be sure to use appropriate engineering judgement and experience in pressure vessel design, as called for in the forward.

From a stress perspective, take a look at General Note (c) in II-D Table 3 which might apply to your situation and limits the allowable stress to 80% of that listed in the table.
