Complex partitioning?

Complex partitioning?

Complex partitioning?

(OP)
Hi all,

I wonder, is it possible to use a part to serve as a mold for partitioning another part?  For instance, if I create a cube with dimensions 1 x 1 x 1, and another cube with dimensions 0.8 x 0.8 x 0.8, can I use the smaller cube to partition the larger cube such that I end up with a cube consisting of a 0.1 thick shell surrounding the interior?  Thanks in advance for your help!

RE: Complex partitioning?

Instead of using another cube, you can do the same with following:

In part module:
shape>shell>from solid.

Great, thanks for the help Gurmeet!

I did create a shell, however for my analysis I would like to use tetrahedral elements, so I require the exterior shell surrounding the block to be solid.  I have already tried subtracting the interior block from a larger solid block to create a solid shell, and tying them together, but I receive the following warning during the analysis: There are two unconnected regions in the model.  I don't understand this message, for the exterior shell is connected to the interior block via the tie constraints.  I thought that if I could use partitioning instead, I would eliminate this problem.  Any ideas?

RE: Complex partitioning?

Hi,

In the assembly module of Abaqus CAE, you can merge the two cubes by retaining the boundaries. It will then create two partitions.
Hope it helps.

Okay!  Thank you very much for you advice.  Unfortunately, I still get the same warning message when I do this.  Perhaps there is another unrelated problem with my model that is causing this, so I will have to keep testing.
