What is S80 steel?

What is S80 steel?

What is S80 steel?

(OP)
I have to make a custom oversized bushing to repair an aircraft corrosion problem; I contacted the manufacturer and was told the original material is S80. I've found a couple vendors in the UK that sell it but I wonder if it converts to a more convenient standard?  Also, what is the difference between 4 S80, 5 S80 and 6 S80? Thank you!!

RE: What is S80 steel?

This is a martensitic stainless steel equivalent to Type 431 in SAE and ASTM standards.  The following link shows the general comparison:

You should order according to SAE AMS5628F if this is for an aircraft/helicopter/aerospace application.

RE: What is S80 steel?

The 4, 5 and 6 are version numbers with what are probably trivial amendments to the basic British Standard. Version 6 is the latest (see  http://www.bsi.co.uk/  or a purveyor of standards such as IHS or whatever for details of earlier revisions).

Depending on the exact application, if it's an aircraft it would be wise to procure to the S80 standard unless someone is available to sign off a deviation.
