Is there a standard on how to word a specific item.  For example if I have a 30' Cat 5E Cable, how would I go about wording it on the drawing and in the system?

Would it be something like, Cable, 30'Cat 5E?

I'm just trying to find some consistancy in part names.

Any help is appreciated.

RE: Part Number Description

There is a standard to part names of sorts.  Check the Drafting Zone (www.draftingzone.com, I believe) for drafting standard documents that will have this information.  I believe the ASME standards also say something about this, though I don't remember which one right now (Maybe ASME Y14.100)

Generally speaking, place what it is first in the name. Then list what distenquishes from other simlar parts, then function (and if so inclinded, product or other top level reference). Don't split up noun phrases.

For example:

JUNCTION BOX,TALL,NEMA 4,LOVE MACHINE

Not sure if this is what you're looking for -
This isn't necessarly just for a description "on the drawing and in the system" but it's a good consistant place to start when thinking about a naming convention. I'm sure there is other sources for this information as well but this is one I've been using lately.

Do a search on "title" to get to the section about naming.

While you're at it, think about abbreviations. Is there a maximum length for descriptions? When naming things I like to have Noun, then what is the most important thing next and so on to the end.
e.g. SCR, soc hd, 10-24 x .75 Black Oxide.
