TM 0177 Sol A What is the Chloride PPM in solution

TM 0177 Sol A What is the Chloride PPM in solution

TM 0177 Sol A What is the Chloride PPM in solution

(OP)
NACE TM 0177 Solution A

50 g of sodium Chloride (Ragent purity grade 99.99% pure)
5 g of Glacial acitic Acid (Reagent grade Purity 99.9%)

Dissolved in 945 g of H2O (De ionaized Water quality better than Grade type IV of ASTM D 1193).

What is the PPm of chloride in the above solution?

RE: TM 0177 Sol A What is the Chloride PPM in solution

PPM is a ridiculous attempt to quantify concentration.  Why do you want to use it?  You have solution concentration by mass fraction (50/945), and it is easy to convert to molar fraction if needed.

ridiculous or not, the idea is to know what will be the PPM of chloride in each and every type of solution of TM 0177.

As per NACE Mr 0175/ISO 15156 the combination of Chloride and h2S is indicated to have effect on the various material.

In order to find the effect of Chloride i want to change the chloride content (PPM) in the test solution (but keep the H2S partial pressure constant) and test the specimen extracted from the same material.

Hence the attempt to know the PPM in Solution A.

RE: TM 0177 Sol A What is the Chloride PPM in solution

50 g of Cl- per 1000 g of solution is 50,000 parts per million by mass.

Thanks CoryPad

50 g of NaCl was taken and was included in the solution.

1) In 50 g of Na Cl, would Sodium not contribute to some portion and woud it not interfere in the PPM calcultation?

RE: TM 0177 Sol A What is the Chloride PPM in solution

Yes it does to the tune 23/58 !  If you vary the Cl- concentration you are not then testing in accordance with TM0177; you are moving into the territory of EFC 17.  Take some time to review that EFC document - it could be helpful to you.

Thanks SJones

I do not have EFC 17. I have ordered a copy. Hope to get it soon.

In the meantime, could you please confirm that the Chloride PPM in the TM 0177 Solution a is (23/58)*(50000) PPM = 19828 PPM (Let us say it is 20000 PPM.

RE: TM 0177 Sol A What is the Chloride PPM in solution

No - it is 35/58 (or 35.4/58.3 to get down to finer points) .  The Ar value of sodium is 23 (22.9).
