Two way left turn lanes

Two way left turn lanes

Two way left turn lanes

Does anyone have information about who has the right of way in a two way left turn lane? I can not find anything in writing about federal guidelines. Any information would be greatly appreciated as our community does not have any specific information about it.

RE: Two way left turn lanes

In Australia we have a basic law that generally sorts these issues out. Quite simply it is give way to the right if in doubt.

Your local drivers licensing authority should know the answer.

RE: Two way left turn lanes

In the U.S., all traffic laws are state laws.  My understanding is that the first person in the TWLTL has the right of way, but I may not be right.

RE: Two way left turn lanes

Given that it's not unlike an uncontrolled intersection, the 1st one in should have the right of way, although it can be grossly abused, as I've seen people enter the lane from 300 ft back.

RE: Two way left turn lanes

If we dont know who has the right of way, how should we expect the public to know? That is why I won't put one of these in. In my area they are known as "Suicide Lanes". Enuf said.

I've researched and still can't find any guideline for this. I do not like to use the explaination of "That's the way we've always done it" or "That's what I've heard". I would like to be able to have some written guidelines. I agree that if it is confusing to us, then how can we explain it to the public.
