Construction Management VS Project Management

Construction Management VS Project Management

Construction Management VS Project Management

(OP)
Hi everone ,

Can anyone throw light on how the aspects of Project Mgmt different from construction mgmt, other than the fact that CM is a construction dept manager while PM manages whole project.

In other words what additional knowledge does an construction manager require ( from management perspective) to be a project manager.

RE: Construction Management VS Project Management

Financials, logistics, forecasting, etc...

RE: Construction Management VS Project Management

Presumably, a project manager, in this context, is managing the entire scope of the design/build of something.  Therefore, he needs:
>  coordinate/mediate between designer and contractor
>  manage city adminstration interfaces, e.g., planning commission and permits
>  coordinate/mediate between designer and customer
>  balance cost/schedule demands between designer and contractor
>  etc.

The usual job management stuff applies, only everything is bigger, and there are even more constraints, not fewer.

RE: Construction Management VS Project Management

unotec & IRstuff have it - it's managing the contract & administrative side of the project, i.e. change management, budgets, correspondence, legal aspects, contracts, etc.

Where the CM concerns himself with physically executing the job from a labor, equipment and materials standpoint.

RE: Construction Management VS Project Management

From this article about Construction Project Management,

Quote:

Specifically, project management in construction encompasses a set of objectives which may be accomplished by implementing a series of operations subject to resource constraints.

I think this article helps a lot, as it briefly explains Project Management, and then the specific aspects Construction Project Management as a subset of Project Management.

RE: Construction Management VS Project Management

One more addition is that the Project Management is more client oriented (ie focussing on getting the the job done to meet the performance criteria defined by the client) while construction management is more contractor oriented (ie focussing on getting the job done within the contractor's defined performance criteria).
