Calculating settlement

Calculating settlement

Calculating settlement

(OP)
Can anyone tell me how to calculate predicted settlement from oedometer tests (e log p curve). I know how to calculate the collapse with the formula((eo-e1)/1+eo)*100. But dont know how to arrive at total settlement.

RE: Calculating settlement

From a consolidation test find, the e log p curve, you need to find the compression index value (Cc). Should be something like 0.20. Then, use the classical formula, found in any geotech book:

S = [Cc/(1+eo)*log ((po+Dp)/po)]*H(thickness of soil)

Look for Braja Das Geotechnical Engineering book.

good luck

RE: Calculating settlement

Oh - and don't forget the Bjerrum correction factor . . .  and be happy if you are within 30% of the "real value".
