Std Weld Practice?

Std Weld Practice?

Std Weld Practice?

(OP)
I have an application where I use both fusion welding and resistance, spot, welding. We have always avoided spot welding over a fusion seam but an inspector has rejected a part because a spot weld is missing in a location over a fusion weld. I informed him that we don't spot over a fusion and he asked "Why not?". I have looked through some general weld specs and have not found anything to support my position. Does anyone know of an AWS spec or something that will say that it is not good practice to spot weld over an existing fusion weld?

Thanks

RE: Std Weld Practice?

Unless the spot weld would interfere with any NDT of the fusion weld, I would agree with your inspector.

RE: Std Weld Practice?

As an inspector (AWS CWI), I would have to agree with metengr and your inspector.  Unless your weld engineer has any ojections or the fusion weld has not been inspected or the spot/resistance weld would interfere with inspection of the fusion weld, there is no reason to skip a location.

The best way to test something is to squeeze it, slowly, until it breaks!
