Gas/Air Compressor Build & Design Question.
Gas/Air Compressor Build & Design Question.
(OP)
I am interested in designing and building a multi-stage reciprocating gas/air compressor (and ultimately mini compression/decompression chamber).
My background is in software engineering, and design. I completed a several(hobby) projects such as a pressurized air delivery system, and some robotics.
I want to use a single phase 3-5hp electric motor. Two/maybe three stage compression, and whatever cooling necessary.
My questions:
1. Where do I start?
2. What are good sources as to learning how to design such compressor
3. Which software should I use to design it?

RE: Gas/Air Compressor Build & Design Question.
Why design it, just buy it already designed. If you want to play around as a hobby, then just go get one already designed and tear it apart and learn how its built and try to improve it.

Here are two URLs that you might find useful when dealing with engineering background information and calculations:

This is great info, will study it for now.
dcasto, yes I do want to build one as a hobby, and have a good idea how it will work.
I'll post CAD drawings soon.
Thanks again!
RE: Gas/Air Compressor Build & Design Question.
How much pressure do you want to produce?
This link shows a small recip.

RE: Gas/Air Compressor Build & Design Question.
for now 10-20bar, in a future I'd like to go much higher.
Basically looking to link and array (2-3) cylinders to a crank shaft (electrical motor powered), and therefore create stages.
Does not have to be small nor efficient for now.
This is more of a research/hobby project.
I just need a place to start, can't find much on google.,
in terms of parts, design ideas, etc.. How to deal with heat & condensation. Safety precautions, and everything else...
too bad there isn't air/gas "Compressors for dummies" out there.
