Coordinate system orientation

Coordinate system orientation

Coordinate system orientation

(OP)
hello Friends
it was glad to have replies from you for clearing my doubts.
I have a question with the orientattion of the coordinate system.

firstly my question is that can we change the orientation of the coordinate system as we like even before starting drawing.
i.e. in front view we get an x-y plane but what i wanted xand -ve z plane. is it possible to make such changes.

secondly i have created all my part files in normal coordinate system and assembled them. now i want to them to have orientation of the coordinate system in different direction. can i change the coordinate orientation without any changes in the model. or even rotate the model such that i get the required coordinate system.
I thought atleast in assembly mode i could change the orientation but not able to. i tried rotating the first part but it doesnt rotate.
can you kindly help me out.

actually i want to calculate the center of mass and intertia properties along this new axes direction.
and want to locate the coordinate system fixed at the coordinate system.

thanking you
Regards
Kartik

RE: Coordinate system orientation

First Question:
The coordinate system cannot be simply moved without creating other problems and workarounds. However, feature sketches can be moved onto different planes which will re-orient the features.

Second Question:
The first component in the Feature Manager (FM) is usually Fixed when it is inserted into the assy. If you RMB (Right Mouse Button) click on the first component, you should be able to select Float and then apply mates to orient it as you need. If you have mated all following components to the first one, they should automatically re-orient themselves; if not, you will have to fix them manually.

cheers

hi thanks for your valuable reply
this has given me an insight.
i didnt understand when you said that feature sketches can be moved onto different planes which will re-orient the features.
do u mean that i can copy one sketch from the plane to the other one and all other features will follow.

i need to check if the first component can be able to float that should help me
thank you once again

RE: Coordinate system orientation

"do u mean that i can copy one sketch from the plane to the other one and all other features will follow."

The plane a sketch is on can be changed by clicking on a sketch in the FM, selecting Edit Sketch Plane and then selecting another plane.

Unless you are either very lucky or were very clever when creating the part, doing this on the first sketch feature would completely screw up the rest of the features. Usually you would have to roll back the FM and change and fix every sketch in sequence. Usually is not worth the hassle.

Using the Move/Copy Body function to re-orient the part would probably be the simplest method ... but that does add a feature.

cheers

RE: Coordinate system orientation

If your main reason for wanting to change the orientation of the part with respect to the origin is for use in computing mass properties, you can use Insert -> Reference Geometry -> Coordinate System to create a new coordinate system with the desired orientation with respect to the part.  This coordinate system can be used for computing mass properties and used while exporting to some other file formats.

If you want to change how the default views relate to the coordinate system, the views can be redefined and saved in a template.  I tried combining this with renaming the default top-front-right planes to match, but I did not end up with the plan orientation that I desired.
