Full encirclement saddles for branch connections

Full encirclement saddles for branch connections

I heard that ASME B31.3 will require full encirclement saddles for branch connections in the next edition.  Is there any truth to this rumor?

RE: Full encirclement saddles for branch connections

IFRs

I would like to know where that rumor came from.

We have nothing like that on our current agenda and I can see no inquiry that we have that would lead to that.  Also, there is nothing like that in the current Mechanical Design Technical Committee agenda.  If someone has any question regarding the branch connection rules of B31.3, they should submit and inquiry (see B31.3, Appendix Z).

Regards, John.

John -
Thanks!  It sounds like you are on the committee?
A customer told us, perhaps he was mis-informed.  As far as I knew, full encirclement was only recommended for branch conditions are outside of the descriptions in section 304.3.1 (b) (1) through (4) or per 304.3 when the branch size approaches the run size or when repetitive stresses may be imposed.
