Importing csv or txt files to create complex curves

Importing csv or txt files to create complex curves

Importing csv or txt files to create complex curves

(OP)
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with importing csv/txt files into Solidworks 2008? Is it possible? I have some very complex curves which I want to turn into 3D models.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Importing csv or txt files to create complex curves

Have you tried the Insert > Curve > Curve Through XYZ Points function?

cheers

Thanks, that looks promising, I hadn't tried that. I have managed to get a simple curve working but it seems that it won't let me import numbers with a decimal point. Do you know if that is something solidworks can't handle or is it something I am doing wrong?

Thanks again!

RE: Importing csv or txt files to create complex curves

SW can definitely handle decimals in the XYZ function.

Are you saying SW will not accept the file?

Which format are you trying to import? Only .txt or .sldcrv are allowable.

cheers

After tinkering around for a while I realised that:

a) ALL numbers must be to the same number of decimal places (or at least you cannot have some numbers with and some without a decimal point).
b) SW won't accept a 0,0,0 point.

Got my curves imported now - thanks for the advice :)

You should check out my FuncPlot and SurfPlot macros on 3DContentCentral. They might be helpful if the curves you're using are function driven.

RE: Importing csv or txt files to create complex curves

hello i would like to continue on the topic. i have an equatio that the curve should follow.
How do i create such curves in solidworks.
what is funcPlot and SurfPlot, never cme across this.
can you kindly guide me through this.

well in importing the file. i dont think thee is much problem with the decimal points.
well but i dont have problem in importing the text file that i created from excel. it doesnt take it...
can you tell how do i export my points from the excel.
