Sweep Error: Cannot get a point on the path to start with

Sweep Error: Cannot get a point on the path to start with

Sweep Error: Cannot get a point on the path to start with

(OP)
I keep getting this error when trying to create a sweep.  “Cannot get a point on the path to start with.  For an open path, the path must intersect with the section plane.”  I cannot figure it out; I have a sketch that I will use as the path.  I make a plane “Normal to a curve” and sketch the profile on it.  Then, I try to sweep and get his error.  Sometimes, if I repeat the process at the other end of the path, it will work.  Sometimes not.  Any thoughts?

RE: Sweep Error: Cannot get a point on the path to start with

Do you have a pierce relationship between the profile and the path?

RE: Sweep Error: Cannot get a point on the path to start with

(OP)
No, that's when I know it will fail.  If I can pierce the center of the circle with the path it works.  If I can only add a coincident to the endpoint, I know it won’t.  What I don’t get is it that it says that the path does not intersect the section plane, yet the path was used to create the plane.

RE: Sweep Error: Cannot get a point on the path to start with

Ctrl+pick a line on the sketch and it's endpoint then Insert > Reference Geometry > Plane and you are guaranteed a plane perpendicular to your line (even if it's an arc).

Now copy the sketch from the feature tree and paste it onto the new plane.

P.S.
I know that technically a line is not the same as an arc, but I didn't want to confuse you by calling it an entity.

Nope, that doesn't work.  Thanks though.

RE: Sweep Error: Cannot get a point on the path to start with

Not sure what is going wrong because I have done hundreds of parts that way, even with 3D sketches.

RE: Sweep Error: Cannot get a point on the path to start with

I just tried it without the profile being constrained (pierce or coincident) and it worked fine. Perhaps you could post your model or a jpeg and someone will recognize what is going on.

It’s weird; sometimes it works, sometimes not.  Once I learn how to upload the part I’ll do so.

RE: Sweep Error: Cannot get a point on the path to start with

I tried to set a pierce for the circle center and couldn't. When I did an edit on the plane I noticed a .00083ft offset between the plane and the line end point. I couldn't seem to effect that using the plane set-up you have. I thought it should work.

How did the plane get to be offset from the point?  The line and point were used to create it.  Is there a hidden setting I’m missing that would cause this?
The pierce will not work because they don’t touch.  Can you set it to zero?

RE: Sweep Error: Cannot get a point on the path to start with

I tried to set it to zero: I tried to set the origin to the end point; I tried to select only the curve (w/o the end point). Every time I would open the plane back up to edit the position the offset was there. I don't get it.

How are able to change the offset?  It is normal to curve.

RE: Sweep Error: Cannot get a point on the path to start with

There's an offset involved?  That increases the chance that your start point and plane do not intersect.

Long way around...
Extend your guide curve past where you need it to start.  Add a point coincident with that curve to mark your start and create your plane through that.

I'm guessing a bit, as I am still on 07 and can't open your file.

RE: Sweep Error: Cannot get a point on the path to start with

Actually, I'm not. What I'm refering to is that the default in the plane setting says .00083 ft even if I reset it to zero it resets to .00083. When I measure the points SW tells me they intersect. I'm just as confused as you are so I'm digging around for defaults, etc.

When I measure between the point and plane it says they intersect!

RE: Sweep Error: Cannot get a point on the path to start with

Yes, I know. For kicks I moved your plane 33 to the other end of your path and placed a new plane at the end point parallel. Same problem, no pierce though they supposedly intersect.

RE: Sweep Error: Cannot get a point on the path to start with

More info - when I measure the length of the path (just the first straight part) I get 83.11820238 ft but when I measure the center distance from the circle sketch to the repositioned plane I get 83.11970625 ft even though they supposedly intersect.

I duno.  I guess I’ll just muscle my way through.  I had someone suggest using the weldment environment.  Maybe I’ll look into that, although I’ve only used it in class, four years ago.

RE: Sweep Error: Cannot get a point on the path to start with

I understand. But I'd like to know why it doesn't seem to work when it should. Where is that offset coming from? Sorry I couldn't help.

No problem, thanks for looking at it for me.

RE: Sweep Error: Cannot get a point on the path to start with

This was still bugging me today so I was hoping that someone would have an insight as to what is happening. There is a sweep that executes properly that has the same basic issues as this sketch (no pierce point) so it seems like it should work. I moved the sketch plane for the problem sweep to the middle of the path sketch, yet could not get a pierce point (didn't matter if I made the center point and the origin coincident or not). The sweep still would not work either. I'd assume sueflow has moved on but it would be nice to know why this doesn't work... sometimes.

I don’t know, maybe the file is corrupt somehow.  I cannot seem to sweep any more.  What a pain…
