Refrigerant Capacity & Charge

Refrigerant Capacity & Charge

Refrigerant Capacity & Charge

(OP)
Hi Guys,
I have very small inquiry regarding converion of refrigerant charge quantity wrt its capcity.

E.g for cpmmercial window type AC, if I know the charge capacity of 50lb, how much would be its capacity in (refrigerant) TON?
Apprciated if I know the convertion details.
Thanks & Have a nice day!

RE: Refrigerant Capacity & Charge

There is no direct correlation between the weight of the charge in a unit and the unit's cooling capacity.

The amount of charge has to be large enough so that all of the parts of the system that are supposed to have liquid in them have liquid in them under the worst conditions.

The amount of charge has to be small enough so that none of the part of the system that are supposed to have gas in them have liquid in them under the worst conditions.

The worst conditions for the two cases above are not the same.

RE: Refrigerant Capacity & Charge

50lbs of refrigerant is one giant amount of refrigerant for a window unit I would think 50 oz is more like it. As Mint Julip said the amount of  refrigerant charge quantity is no measure of a units capacity.
A units refrigeration capacity is based on mass flow rate(lbs.hr) and the refrigeration effect(btu/lb) of the pound of refrigerant circulated.

RE: Refrigerant Capacity & Charge

If you went through the manufacturers range of window units, you could find the charge in each model size, and probably get a rough idea of this relationship.

(?)

I wouldn't publish papers on it tho...
