defaulting color settings for every part-like emissivity

When I change any part color, the emissivity changes to zero, which makes color very dark.  Can I change the default to 50.  I've changed my part template and it stays with at 50 on a new part, until i go to change the parts color.  I'm just looking to change the default of the emissivity.

RE: defaulting color settings for every part-like emissivity

One way I know would be to create your own custom color swatches. This color swatch can be placed on a network location as well so all users have access to it.

Make sure to add the location by going to Tools-System Options-File Locations- Color Swatches

To modify the default color swatches in SolidWorks browse to their standard location which is typically C:Program Files\SolidWorks\lang\english\colorswatches

You can open the files with notepad and modify the default emissivity values and save the file back to the same location. I would recommend saving it as a different file name so that you have the original file as a back-up if needed. Let me know if you need more details....

If you need emissivity to keep your colors from getting too dark, maybe there's a different issue.  How is your lighting set?

RE: defaulting color settings for every part-like emissivity

My second suggestion does not seem to be working for me but it has worked for me in earlier versions of SolidWorks. Not sure what seems to be going on with my system. I will play around with it some more to see what I come up with or maybe another guru can offer some advice.

I did get it to work but the color swatch has to reside outside of the standard location for color swatches. I would recommend you place it to a network location so that all users have access to it.

I found it is easier to copy the standard swatch  modify the settings with notepad and re-save it to a different location and name. Be sure to point to the new location or you will not be able to select it from the drop-down menu.

Nice one Tick,
I have about 6 flourescent lights surrounding my cubicle, but none near my desk.

Aside from that, I went to the template and modified the "ambient" to 1, where it was set to .3.  Now the colors stay bright, without needing to reset the emissivity.

Does anyone remember when Cad meant black background and green geometry, and text?  Ah what simpler times.

Thanks Tick

RE: defaulting color settings for every part-like emissivity

As I understand emissivity is meant to be used on objects that is supposed to emit(sp?)light, objects like bulbs etc. Am I right?

RE: defaulting color settings for every part-like emissivity

Correct.  Especially good for simulating LED's.

I had no idea.  When I started 2008, i poked and hoped until the parts looked the way they used to.  and that's what worked.  I guess I should have posted this question back then.

Thanks for the help and education guys.
