Seal weld as strength weld?

Seal weld as strength weld?

Seal weld as strength weld?

(OP)
Connection details on our design drawings show a 3/16 fillet weld, both sides, for a 3/8" gusset plate welded to the flanges of W shapes, say W10 x 45. Gusset plates are utilized for the connections of vertical bracing, welded to beam, bolted to bracing.

Although a 3/16 fillet is all that is needed for strength, the "green book", Tbl. J2.4, states that the minimum weld in this case is 1/4 based on the flange thickness of the W10.

The detailer has followed our design drawings and called out for a 3/16 fillet weld, but also states that 1/4 seal weld will be used.  Assuming that the 1/4 seal weld is actually what will be fabricated in the shop can we assume that the 1/4 fillet seal weld will meet the requirements of Section J2?

RE: Seal weld as strength weld?

There's no guarantee that you'll get what you are looking for is the word "seal" is associated with your structural weld.  Seal welds in most cases are subject to inspection for size, just that they are there.  The detailer probably specified it because this item is being galvanized - is that right?
My advise would be to have him call out the 1/4" fillet on each side to make sure that you are in line with the spec.  If the fabricator is a stand up guy, he won't have a problem with the extra 1/16th.

RE: Seal weld as strength weld?

The weld doesn't know it's just a seal weld.  If the code calls for a larger weld because of concerns about cracking during cooling, that applies regardless of the intended purpose of the weld.

RE: Seal weld as strength weld?

The green book is outdated.  The new spec bases the minimum fillet weld size on the THINNER part joined.  So the 3/16" weld is acceptable for a 3/8" gusset.

Thanks for the input.

The fabricator got back to me and stated that the minimum weld used is 1/4 regardless of the details provided, or the shop drawing callout.

I knew we could get it worked out, I just did not look forward to marking up 250+/- shop drawings.

The client is not located within the US, and has not upgraded his specifications beyond the green book.

Thank you again.
