Cut like machine tool

Is there a way in proE to revolve a cylinder with it's axis perpendicular to the part axis (which is cylindrical) to create a cut in the part (i.e. simulate a machine cut using a minimaster cutting tool)?

This has been covered somewhat in thread554-112447: Assembly Cut using feature but I find it very difficult to believe I have to go into assembly mode to do this.

I've attached a pic to show in better detail what I need to accomplish.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Cut like machine tool

Well if the picture you showed is not in assembly mode, wouldn't just be simpler to revolve the cross-section of the cylinder?

But then I'd end up with a square end to the cut? I may be missing something, if so, please explain.

Basically, I need to be able to take the shape of a solid, sweep it along a path, and do the cut.

I've included a better picture to explain this. I realize this could likely be done in 2-3 steps, but I was hoping for 1.

Thanks.

RE: Cut like machine tool

Revolve the shape of the cut u want around the axis of the cylinder. Thts what i understand from the better picture u posted.

RE: Cut like machine tool

Ok so the cut is not 360 degress?

Sounds easy. Now go try it.

Remember that I want the cut to start and end with the 'round' surface geometry of the cylinder doing the cut - much like a minimill would do if rotating perpendicular about the axis of the part. And I want the remaining 'key' feature to be of a fixed size.

So here's what I came up with in 3 steps.
It'll do for now... (pic)

RE: Cut like machine tool

Revolve a cylinder around an axis perpendicular to the shaft at the depth you want (into the shaft)--that's your mill cut at that one spot. Now, pattern that revolve around the axis of your shaft a whole ****load of times (to get rid of the flat bottom of your "end mill"--say 100 times about a total of 300° or whatever total angle you like). That's as close as you're gonna get without using assembly mode.

Repeat as necessary for subsequent "mill" cuts.

vc66 - You make me laugh - ROTFLMAO

That was as close as I could come too... but the regen time burned up my model and it melted like butter...

RE: Cut like machine tool

I am interested to know how you would do this in assembly mode (if thats considered the right way to do it).

RE: Cut like machine tool

Tim39-

Yea, having like 1000 patterned features just for a keyed shaft seems like overkill, and will definitely bloat a model.

JCReynolds79 - you make an excellent point.  I've just spent an hour and couldn't find a way in assembly mode either.

If you find a way, please share it.

This needs to be on a PTC 'wish list'.
