Milling CPM 10V

(OP)
Has anyone had any luck milling CPM 10V? If so what did you use. We have used everything from Sandvik to Ingersol. Best luck was with Sandvik's new 490 2" Cutter 1030 grade. Tool life is not where I think it should be.

RE: Milling CPM 10V

Only to roughing tolerances.  Most of the tooling I was making out of 10V had to be ground to finish size so I wasn't trying for an ultrasmooth finish, nor was I trying to hold ±.001.  For slab milling, we generally ran a much larger head, around 4"-6", but only took about 0.010"-0.020" per pass.  Form milling was done with solid carbide end mills.  These were one-of-a-kind pieces, so I couldn't tell you what the wear was in a production environment.

We've been running CBN inserts with success on some Fe-W blend sintered PM parts that we make.  The wear has been excellent.  We'll use the CBN only for finish passes, choosing to rough with carbide and coolant instead.  It may be a viable option for you.  Here's an article for reference: http://www.mmsonline.com/articles/010203.html
