plastic/metal hybrid mold

(OP)
I have a thin sheet metal part that I'm looking to do for lack of a better word over-mold.  It's an electronic enclosure that will have a sheet metal part embedded into part of it.  I've been searching the net but haven't come up with any good sites that address design issues.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

RE: plastic/metal hybrid mold

Better to just talk with your molder about what's possible in his shop and how he'd like to see it specified.

RE: plastic/metal hybrid mold

Moulding small bits onto sheet metal pressings is (In UK/EU) called "outsert" moulding. (Although a search for "insert" might get you additional results.

I have seen a moulding press and fancy tooling, making a drawn and pierced steel pressing (strip fed) on the top half an injection mould tool, a robot transferring this to another cavity where a rubber seal was moulded onto the steel part.

Hope this helps

Cheers

RE: plastic/metal hybrid mold

Polyplastics in Japan used to publish an excellent technical advice book that included examples of outsert moulding of their "Duracon" brand Acetal Co-polymer. Maybe they can still supply it.

If you can't find it elsewhere, I may be able to find my copy and scan it for you.

RE: plastic/metal hybrid mold

Pat/all, If you Google "outsert molding" (with the incorrect spelling) you get mainly Ticona stuff (used to be Hoechst/Celcon) hits. They seem to be pushing it these days too.

RE: plastic/metal hybrid mold

Yes Harry

Polyplastics was a joint venture with Celenese, so probably part of Ticona now
