smoke Evacuation System

(OP)
Hi everybody,

Our client has asked if we can install a smoke evacuation system in the building that they are going to occupy but the building ownder does not agree since it is not specified in the local fire code. Do you have any references in the NFPA, ASHRAE or any standards that can show that these are requirement? Thank you in advance for your responses.

RE: smoke Evacuation System

It all depends on building size...  IBC (I think section 909 or 910) has requirements for smoke exhaust systems, IMC (Section 513) has specifics on design.

If you don't fall under the requirements of the code (which wouldn't be surprising) the insurance company (loss prevention) of the business could require it, but that would be your only other way to "force" the owner to install a system.

I don't think you want to get into installing smoke control in an existing building.  Sealing the barriers between control zones may be impossible with the building occupied.  If the zone barriers aren't sealed, the system won't segregate areas properly.  Then you spent all that money for nothing.
