In some especially colder countries, bracings are required to be placed in mid bays of longitudinal axis. This allows free expansion and contraction of the building from mid bays outwards.
But this reduces torsional stiffness of a building terribly and wont show good performance in seismic zones for example.
What is the recommended practice and basis?

Where will the brace matter is what I am looking for csd72, you can add more comments if you wish.
As far as I can see practice is to distribute them according to the number of bays, say 1 brace bay every 4,for example

It is the space between two brace that is the problem - effectively a shrinking beam between 2 fixed points. As long as you put your braces close together at the center then this should not be a problem.
