Good pump to handle greasy sewage?

Good pump to handle greasy sewage?

Good pump to handle greasy sewage?

(OP)
We are installing a grease interceptor that can handle mixed waste (FOG and raw sewage from restrooms). The grease interceptor location is too high to gravity feed. This is for a large food court. Anyone else have this problem? What pump would you recommend using? I foresee FOG accumulation in the lift station and pump failure, and would like to avoid both.

RE: Good pump to handle greasy sewage?

You may want to inject a degreaser into your sump. Also maintenance is a must. If this is all inside a bldg. you will have odors.

If you are really concerned about floatables, you can use the Wemco Hidrostal Prerotation Pump that will skim the surface. These would be more expensive than the standard submersible lift station pumps. You may also look into the chopper pumps made by Vaughn.

You may also contemplate a heater in the sump to reduce the solidification of the grease. It makes pumping a whole lot easier.

The Hidrostal prerotation is an excellent solution.

I have also used progressive cavity pumps by Mono , Moyno, Seepex, Borgemann and others. Heat race the barrel to keep the grease form clogging. You may need to heat trace your piping or use glass lined pipe to stop clogging.

My experience comes from handling the scum in municipal sewage treatment plants which is where your fluid is going to end up.

RE: Good pump to handle greasy sewage?

You might want to check with your local plumbing code official.

Most codes that I am familiar with will not let you send toilet room waste to a grease interceptor.  This causes more flow to the unit which requires retention to separate the FOG, unless you are using an automatic system.

When you say "large food court" are you refering to something in a mall where there are a lot of vendors or is it a single food supplier.  If it is multiple suppliers, you might think about designing point of use grease "traps" if the code official will let you.  You can get some with automatic grease removal equipment so that there is less of the traditional maintenance that "storage" type traps require.
