I am rehabilitating a steel bridge and the concrete end diaphragm has embedded steel bracing utilized during original erection.  I am redecking the bridge and reconfiguring the abutment/diaphragm.  I need to remove and replace/reconfigure the concrete of the end diaphragm without damaging the steel bracing.

Does anyone have experience with the use of soundless chemical demolition agents (SCDAs)?

Try Special Breaks at "http://www.ram-aid.biz" They specialize in this work. You may be able to do this with 35 lb. chipping guns or why not simply install new bracing before removing the existing?

I've seen this material used to breakup some substantial reinforced concrete machine bases. In discussions with the supervisor of the group that did the work he mentioned a material called Nonex that they sometime use outside.

I seem to remember running across ads for something called Bristar I believe in years past in the "Civil Engineering" magazine - a chemical agent that causes concrete to expand and crack.  It is slow acting, not exposive.

msquared48.

If you look at this website it talks about Bristar being taken off the American market and replaced by Bustar.
