What concentration of propylene glycol is dangerous?

(OP)
Hi,does anyone know the concentration of propylene glycol that will risk people's health?

Thank you for any help?

RE: What concentration of propylene glycol is dangerous?

Check the MSDS.

RE: What concentration of propylene glycol is dangerous?

That's for ethylene, bimr. It was always my understanding that propylene glycol is non-toxic. I believe that was the issue with the counterfeit toothpaste from China a while back. They had used ethylene glycol by mistake.

RE: What concentration of propylene glycol is dangerous?

Propylene Glycol is a GRAS (generally recognize as safe) chemical. This said there have been cases where there were toxic reactions form propylene glycol used as a solvent in some intravenous formulations.

The toothpaste and cough syrup contained diethylene glycol that was used in place of the more expensive glycerin.

Sorry for the mixup.

"4.2  High risk circumstance of poisoning

Intoxication similar to that caused by ethanol might be expected if large amounts of propylene glycol were ingested. In reported cases toxic signs appeared only after repeated doses of propylene glycol, used as a solvent in medicines, were ingested in small amounts or repeatedly applied to the skin (Glasgow et al, 1983; Martin & Finberg, 1970).

Acute toxicity following i.v. injection of drugs dissolved in significant amounts of propylene glycol has been reported (Hegarty & Dundee, 1977; Demey et al, 1988)."
