Splice in wood beam

(OP)
I have 18 feet span and available length for wood beam is 16 feet . design says 2x12 @ 16"c/c. How to splice these to get 18 feet span

RE: Splice in wood beam

What part of the country are you in?  18' and 20' 2x12 are readily available in the midwest.

RE: Splice in wood beam

you will have to go to a real lumber yard, they don't stock the big ones at Home Depot

RE: Splice in wood beam

I would use an engineered wood section, like a parallam.

RE: Splice in wood beam

Try doing a flitch plate splice with plate or channels with maybe lag or through bolts. I would just do the splice maybe four to five feet long.

RE: Splice in wood beam

Look at buying the engineered wood beams. They may be cheaper. Defintely easier to use. Labor cost should be also figured in before you make a final decision.
