winglet design
winglet design
(OP)
Hi,
For a uni project we're trying to do a detailed design on a wing to reduce the induced drag, we have decided to use winglets to do this but have no idea where to start off for designing this. We were thinking of doing a simplified analysis of the wing and then testing the results with a more detailed cfd simulation. Does anyone know of any theory we can use to do this?
Thanks,
Kieran

RE: winglet design
Vortex lattice method may help you. Check works done by Lamar
at NASA Technical server.

You can also add counter-rotating tip-mounted props to reduce vortex flow.
Here is a good article from one of the fathers of winglet design.

Dozens of papers on the topic are listed [may take a minute or two to retrieve info/listing].
