relink custom properties to drawing view

relink custom properties to drawing view

relink custom properties to drawing view

(OP)
The title block of my drawing is filled by the custom propeties of the assembly (like everyone does).  I deleted the model view and "reinserted" a model view now my title block is not linking to the new model view.

How do I relink the title block to my newly inserted model view.

thanks

RE: relink custom properties to drawing view

In the drawing, right click in the drawing tree on sheet1.  Go to properties.  Down in the lower left there is a field called Use custom property values from model shown in:  By default, this selection is default.  Change this to one of your other views and all of your properties should come back.

Per chance, do you have an empty view in you model that remained after you deleted the first view?  Back before you could group text, I used to put all of my notes on an empty view so I could easily drag all of them.  If I would delete all of my views (except the empty "note" view) I would lose my custom properties.  None the less, this should fix your problem.

RE: relink custom properties to drawing view

This is one of the problems with using model properties to drive displayed drawing information.

Not everyone links values on a drawing directly to the model.  There are pros and cons to linking drawing values to models.  A company must weigh these before committing to one method or another.

AGHH!! Thanks shaggy that did it.

No there was no empty view.

I was doing some 2D line drawing and thought oghh if I delete the model view it will speed up loading then when I'm done I'll just put it back in not realizing I broke the link... Was just me not thinking ahead.

Matt I miss spoke... "The title block of my drawing is filled by the custom propeties of the assembly (like some people do)."

I can't think of a con of doing this though.  If I'm dispaying model X why wouldn't I want to display model X's custom prop's?

Care to discuss?

Thanks for you help.

Grant,
One thing I used too do, was have the Drawn_By property controlled from the model. I found out that the one modeling was not always the one drawing. I now keep Drawn_By property in the drawing only.

Yeah we do that too. We have draw by and modeled by in the model.  So who ever modeled the part fills that prop. in and who ever does the drawing fills that prop. in.  The modeled by prop. gives you a place to start when your throughly confused on how some one drew the part assem. etc.  Cause whoever saved it last is not always the person who modeled it.

RE: relink custom properties to drawing view

You just encountered one of the issues.  There's also the issue of multiple parts on a drawing (where drawing information isn't necessarily driven by one or the other or either). Information isn't necessarily the same between the drawing and models, such as originator and date of origination.  Engineers may not set up models correctly in the first place with all the required information to properly fill out the drawing. Still further, many engineers tend to create their own part/assembly templates that may not interface with the standard drawing template properly. A drawing may not have a model or assembly at all.  Or models or drawings may be from outside sources that have a different schemes.  Also, reliance on document properties can require having to re-create things like the Material Poperties database file so that material names fit with ASME standards (all caps) or even to provide a complete specification, including material or finish standards.  In some environments, drawings tend to have more properties than the model due to notation standards, so this can create confusion as to which drives certain values.  (Does one really want to have to open the model every time a text only spec is changed on the drawing?)  I looked into this recently at my own company and I found that only 2 of the basic 7 properties are 100% common between the model and drawing.  I don't want to create confusion as to where to fill out which properties...I also don't want people editing the sheet format because values from the model is different than the drawing; or still further to have some drawings work differently than other drawings because the method to obtain values where changed via the Properties dialog box.  So I left the custom properties as a function of the drawing and not the model.

There's a lot of rules that must be in place in order for a clean use of model properties directly on the drawing.  Some peole call these good practices.  I just call them rules because at the end of the day it's 6 one way and 1/2 a dozen another.  For me, it's just a matter of having flexibility on how drawings are created and used.

Matt very good points.  Many areas Im not familar with.  If i create a model 9 times outta 10 I do the drawing but who knows as we grow that might not be the case.

Now that I think about it it does waste time swaping back and forth from the model to the drawing to add a rev's. change dates etc.

I'll have to rethink how we do custom props around here.

Again thanks for your thoughts.

RE: relink custom properties to drawing view

The reason I do not like having the Drawn_By property controlled from the model is the fact that we copy a lot of our models. Then the old Drawn_By property shows up on the new drawing. My name showed up on a lot of drawings that I never created.
