UG Export to IGES "Export Translation Submitted" Error

UG Export to IGES "Export Translation Submitted" Error

UG Export to IGES "Export Translation Submitted" Error

(OP)
Hi, guys,
I'm new to the engineering software realm and especially new to posting to forums, so please be patient with me.
I just started work for a unique aviation corporation and I have to work with Unigraphics version, well, uh, NX or NX1.
Almost every time I try to export a UG drawing to an IGES file to then be used by MasterCAM, I choose all defaults, then I get the message "Export Translation Submitted", and no export file or log file.
Sometimes it works, sometimes not.  A computer guy solved the problem a couple times by cleaning up all the "TEMP" files on my workstation, but now it happens almost all the time and cleaning TEMP files doesn't work anymore.
My job lately has been to do some of these, and it looks like I'll be doing even more as time goes on.
If you need more info from me, I'll send, but I was hoping it was just a "known problem" with the program.
Any help would be appreciated.
Ryan

RE: UG Export to IGES "Export Translation Submitted" Error

Ryan,

IGES is okay for geometry and it will attempt to import/export drawings. It will usually fail with the drawings, which is to say it does what it can within limits, but as most CAD systems have fairly different ways of implementing drafting those limits are usually such that the results are next to useless. The information may be there which can at times be useful in itself, but any expectation that a nicely formated editable drawing will result are probably overstepping the mark.

Now from what I know of Mastercam it was more of a manufacturing system when last I saw it some time back. What may I ask do you want to do with the data. If it is machining then you may just want to simplify matters for yourself by taking only the models. Also if you can it would usually be preferrable to use STEP for solids. Step203 or Step214 with convert solids to solids, or assemblies of solids respectively. IGES only ever puts out surfaces and often has trouble trimming the edges correctly hence we say that it degrades the data more than STEP.

If you're lucky you may be able to use parasolids if Mastercam is one of the other CAD systems that also uses the Parasolid Kernel. Somebody will likely post with that information, but you could look at the import options in Mastercam to find out I suspect just as quickly. Parasolid to Parasolid will loose the model parameters pretty much as does step, but there will be no geometry degradation.

Some CAD systems like IDEAS and CATIA also have levels of interoperability with NX such that models with features can be passed in between. Again I don't think Mastercam is on that list and I could be wrong. You would probably need an add-on to run the interoperability as well.

If you just want to do machining then you probably want to take a look at the manufacturing in NX there is some cost involved but one CAD system may be easier to maintain than two.

For drawings you'd really need to state your needs. To most other systems we actually just output a cgm from UG, re-import it into an empty file or a blank layer then output either IGES or DXF from that. CGM may contain text, but is made up mainly of just arcs and lines. It is a dumbed down file that appears like a readable drawing. If you only wanted to be able to read the drawing you might do as well with a PDF file. If you wanted associative dimensions and a maintainable drawing then it is one of the great pains of CAD that between no two systems is this apparently possible to achieve.

Best Regards

Hudson

MasterCam will import a parasolid file.

Thanks Doc,

I had an inking that it might be the case.smile
