AL29-4C

AL29-4C

(OP)
Does anyone know a source for this or equivalent material in China?  or anywhere in Asia for that matter?  Thanks for any information.

To be used in a condensing heat exchanger (natural gas combustion).

RE: AL29-4C

The alloy AL 29-4C is a trademark of Allegheny Technologies.  The UNS number is S44735.
Two words of caution.
1.  There are a number of similar alloys that have similar corrosion resistance, but some of the properties are quite different.  I can give you a list if you need it.
2. NONE of these alloys has ever been made successfully outside of the US, Europe or Japan.  These alloys are very difficult to manufacture properly.  Unless you want to finance the learning curve for a steel mill I suggest that you keep dealing with A-L.  I have even seen mills in the US and Europe 'forget' how to make these alloys and be forced out of the business by poor quality and yields.

Thank you for the response.  I was anticipating the response that you gave, but thought I would ask anyhow.  Many residential furnace heat exchangers use the AL29-4C material, but not many (if any) furnace manufacturers make condensing furnaces in China.

I was thinking about different materials, but the 29-4C has become a selling point over the years... so marketing a furnace using a different alloy for the secondary heat exchanger may not be effective.

Also, forcasting is a big deal when using this material.  It only gets made about twice per year... or so I am told.

Anyhow, thanks again.

RE: AL29-4C

There are other Super-ferritic grades that would be similar and work for the application, but none are made in Asia.
You could use S44660 for the application.
You must not be buying much material if you are having that kind of sourcing issue.
