I'm designing a storm sewer system and one of my structures is very tight on vertical space (dist from an existing 18" RCP invert to the finished grade).  I am limited on how much I can raise the finished grade because of the grade of a nearby road.  Currently, my structure has 4" of clearance from the outside crown of the existing 18" RCP (2.5" thick walls) to the 8" precast structure lid, but I really need to find something smaller.  The structure also has to accomodate an 18" RCP going into and out of the box.  Anybody know any options for loosing a few inches?

RE: Structure spec

Have you looked into using HERCP rather than the 18" Dia pipe?  An equivalent HERCP is 14"x23" with a minimum wall thickness of 2 3/4".  This would give you a few additional inches.

RE: Structure spec

how about two 12" pipes?

RE: Structure spec

Agree with CVG, use multiple smaller pipes.

The pipe flowing into the box is an existing 18" rcp, that being said the 18" rcp i have spec'ed for the outflow shouldn't be a problem.  I guess I have to keep playing with the grading to get the box to work.  Thanks for the tips though!
