I'm upgrading an expanding, rotating mandrel to take a doubled payload. As shown in the attachment, there are 2 sets of 3 equispaced ballscrews expanding rubber faced pads onto the inside of a drum, driven by 1:1 bevel gears.
If the torque required to produce an axial force in each screw is T Nm, will the torque in the drive shaft be
2T Nm or 6T Nm (neglecting losses)?
Also, as it's not a high precision application, would it be acceptable to use unground case hardened EN32 for the gears, as my gear generator says that flame-hardened EN8 would fail on surface pitting whereas case hardened EN32 is OK?
