Is API 5L GrB equivalent to SA 106 GrB or SA 53 GrB? If yes, why? Thanks a lot.

RE: Is API 5L GrB equivalent to SA 106 GrB or SA 53 GrB?

It can be, if seamless. Most mills will triple stamp or quadruple stamp seamless carbon steel pipe as A-106 B, A-53 B, API 5L B and API 5LX-42. The chemistry, mechanical properties and testing methods required for each overlap and the mills can easily control all to permit multiple stamping.

There may be some pipe that meets all specifications,  however the specifications are NOT equivalent, which is why there 3 different ASTM specifications for each in the first place.

If you plan to subtitute API 5LB for SA-106 or SA-53 B to be used in ASME Pressure Vessel Code applications, you may not, unless it can be recertified as SA-106 or SA-53 or it is stamped by the mill as SA-106 B/SA-53 B/API 5L B and the MTR's certify same.
