Cryogenic properties 304 versus 316

Cryogenic properties 304 versus 316

Cryogenic properties 304 versus 316

(OP)
I was wondering whether I could use 316 in lieu of 304 for low temp applications down to -196 C? I am trying to ban all 304 from our site for pitting resistance reasons but have been told we need 304 to achieve the required properties down at these temps. As far as I am aware 316 would be equal to the task?

RE: Cryogenic properties 304 versus 316

nickt1960,
There is no any difference between 304 or 316 as far as criogenic properties concerns. Both are equaly good at liquid nitrogen temperature (-196 deg C). Do some internet research on the topic of criogenic properties of the Austenitic Stainless Steel material, there's plenty..

RE: Cryogenic properties 304 versus 316

Agreed, Type 316 will perform similar to Type 304 at cryogenic temperature provided that it is in the same product form (bar, sheet, etc.).

RE: Cryogenic properties 304 versus 316

316 welding filler metals are also more likely to meet the impact requirements. This is primarily due to the low ferrite content (typically < 4%) of E/ER 316(L) vs E/ER 308(L), although low ferrite content 308 filler metals can readily be ordered/purchased.

RE: Cryogenic properties 304 versus 316

316 will do no harm. It is amazing to see people display their ignorance with authority, especially if they are also decision makers for procurement.
