Help on StormCAD

Help on StormCAD

(OP)
Hi guys:

I'm not sure is this is repeat post or not. I am new to the StormCAD program, and I'm a old school to do drain pipe design(use excel most of the time) I have just started to just the porgram. And, I've been told that it can use rational method and Hazen-Williams Equation combine to do the backflow analysis on stormCAD itself. Can someone show me the processdure how to do it in stormCAD?

Thank you

RE: Help on StormCAD

tsli001,
I would recommend working through an example/tutorial first.  I have not used Stormcad in some time but I remember doing just that when I first learned.  If memory serves me correctly, you will enter the data on each inlet you place.  Check out the online help and/or the manual.

I wish I could be more help.

I'm not familiar with StormCad either BUT, I do know that the Hazen-Williams equation is applicable ONLY to water, flowing in circular pipes, under pressure, within a limited range of Reynolds Numbers. For those reasons alone. it seems very doubtful it could be of much use on a storm drain design or analysis.

The Rational Method too has any limitations. As a ruling pen, drafting linen, slide rule era engineer, I wouldn't use either.

good  luck

Believe or not, some former 'egg-head' in the company have manage to use other together to do the back flow anaylsis. The problem is I'd never done backflow anaylsis before, so I cant tell much of it. If some expert in StormCAD please help me out.

RE: Help on StormCAD

What kind of system are you analyzing?  Storm water drainage or water supply?  I ask because you mention Hazen-Williams and backflow: usually I see those terms in pressure water pipe.  I would say WaterCad would be your best option for pressure pipe.

For storm water, the rational method is used to compute runoff.  You'd use it to get flows to each inlet.  From there, I believe you could use the H-Z equation to determine headloss and other flow characteristics in the system.  There is an option in StormCAD to select your analysis method.

But usually for storm water systems, Manning's equation is preferred, because of the reasons RWF mentioned.  For a small system (roof drains perhaps), H-Z should work fine.

Hi Civ855

Thank you for you answer. I am doing a big drainage piping design, and yes I need to see the headloss and other flow characteristics in the system. So where is the selection in StormCAD that I can select the different anaylsis method?
